10 things to do before moving to a new state
1. Have a job lined up
If you’re relocating for work, this step is already done. However, if you’re moving for fun or family, this might not be checked off the to-do list yet. This is a great first step! Having a job waiting for you in your new state will help relieve a lot of stress that comes with moving.
2. Have an emergency fund set aside
If possible, have about 3-6 months worth of living expenses in an emergency fund by the time moving day rolls around. It’s important to have a cushion in case of unexpected expenses.
3. Research and pick a moving company
It’s best to hire your moving company about 2 months before the big day. Moving in the summer? Think about hiring your moving company even earlier; summer is the most popular time to move—this means that moving companies get booked quickly.
4. Declutter
Don’t move into your new home with a bunch of stuff you don’t want! Save time, space and money decluttering before crossing state lines. This will make a huge difference when it comes to packing, unpacking and hiring a moving company. Which leads us to our next step…
5. Start packing
Once you declutter, start packing! Start with the storage areas and the items you don’t use on a daily basis. Then, work your way to the rooms you frequent.
6. Forward your mail
Forwarding your mail is simple. Make sure you request forwarding a few days before you actually move so mail starts being delivered by the time you arrive and move in.
7. Schedule your utility shut-off date
Don’t pay for utilities in two places! Make sure your utilities in your old home are set to shut off the day you move out.
8. Set up utilities at your new space
Schedule your utilities to be activated the day you move in. This is not something you want to deal with on moving day.
9. Update subscriptions, banks, cell phones and insurers
Remember to update your bank information, cell phone providers and any other subscriptions with your new address. Make sure you notify your address change with the IRS, too.
10. Plan on spending time at the BMV
Once you’ve moved, you’ll have to get a driver’s license for your new state and address. We know, we know… going to the BMV is not the way you want to spend time in your new state. However, it’s necessary and best to get it done right away! By the same token, don’t forget to update your address with the BMV while you’re there; you don’t want a notice to go to your old address and then be driving around with a suspended license!
