What Not to Pack When Moving

September 18, 2024 | Packing How Tos

When packing up your belongings and preparing for a move, it is important to research what you can and cannot load into a moving van or truck. Some items are dangerous and prone to breaking, or they should instead be brought over to your new space in your vehicle so you can utilize them as soon as you arrive at your location. We’ve compiled lists and tips of items that shouldn’t go in the moving truck with the rest of your belongings.

Items to Keep Handy During A Move

There are a lot of moving pieces during a relocation. Coordinating with movers, ensuring children and pets are taken care of, cleaning your old home, transferring bills and making sure you’re not missing any belongings. All of these tasks are important and stressful. Make your move less anxiety-inducing by packing a to-go bag with the following items:

  • Tools like hammers and screwdrivers
  • Toilet paper and Kleenex
  • Hand sanitizer
  • First aid kit
  • Daily medications and ibuprofen
  • Scissors or box cutters
  • Bottled water and snacks
  • A fresh change of clothes

Having these items handy as you get to a new home will help reduce the need to dig through your moving boxes for necessities like toilet paper and water. Packing a bag of activities for your children could also be helpful.

Items Your Movers Can’t (or Won’t) Move

There are some items that professional moving companies either legally cannot or prefer not to move. These hazardous materials contain chemicals that can cause damage to your items or can mix with other chemicals to create a dangerous environment for the moving team. You should either dispose of the following items before moving or ensure that they get packed and carried independently of your other belongings to ensure safety.

  • Aerosol cans, regardless of content
  • Heating agents such as Sterno
  • Nail polish/remover
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Any type of gas in bottles or tanks, including propane or oxygen
  • Paints, varnishes, solvents, thinners and oils
  • Ammonia, bleach and other household cleaning agents
  • Chlorine granules or powder
  • Muriatic acid (also called hydrochloric acid)
  • Auto batteries
  • Charcoal/lighter fluid
  • Matches and lighters
  • Ammunition
  • Any other combustible product

Things That Aren’t Worth Moving

We acquire a lot of clutter; that’s just part of living. A good spring cleaning before your  upcoming move is a great way to eliminate unwanted or outdated items. Obviously, items you’re selling or giving away aren’t worth the hassle of loading up into a moving truck, but there are a lot of items around your house that just aren’t worth packing away.

  • Expired food (or close to expired)
  • Old clothing
  • Bulky furniture that won’t fit in your new space
  • Pools and hot tubs
  • Duplicate tools or appliances
  • Junk drawer items
