Where Can I Find Boxes for Moving Day?

October 22, 2020 | Packing How Tos

Moving can be expensive. So, it’s beneficial to cut costs wherever you can. One place you can try and spend a little less is with your moving boxes. There are plenty of options for getting your hands on free boxes… you just have to plan ahead.

Where Can I Find Free Boxes for Moving Day?

If you’re moving at the last minute or you forgot to plan ahead, you may have a harder time finding free boxes for your move. However, if you’ve given yourself enough time to scour websites and office spaces, then you may just be in luck. Here are some places you can find free moving boxes:

Grocery Stores

Some grocery stores may have produce boxes ready to be recycled. Ask an employee if they have any they’re willing to part ways with. These types of boxes are great for moving fragile or light items.

Online

From Craigslist to Facebook Marketplace, there are several online options for finding free boxes. Craigslist even has a “free” section, full of items people are trying to pawn off—this is the place to look for moving boxes.

Liquor Stores

Go to your local liquor store and ask for any boxes with lids. Any boxes they’re willing to give up are probably small and sturdy. These will be great for books or small and heavy decorations.

Bookstores

You won’t be surprised to learn that a bookstore is a great place to ask for boxes that can transport your, well, books! Ask a bookstore employee for any leftover book boxes.

Fast Food Restaurants

From Starbucks to Taco Bell, fast food restaurants usually have stacks and stacks of cardboard boxes that are meant to be recycled. Don’t be afraid to go to several of these places and ask for the cardboard boxes in the back-of-house.

Your Workplace

If you work at an office, ask your manager or the building owner if there are any boxes you can have. If there aren’t any available in that moment, ask if they’ll set some aside for you in the near future.

Where Can I Buy Boxes for Moving Day?

If you’ve waited to pack until the last minute, if you don’t feel like going to the effort of searching for free boxes, or if you want to make sure you have the perfect box for specialty items such as mirrors or artwork, you can always purchase moving boxes.
