Moving with a big family can be challenging. However, learning how to pack like the pros is a great way to relieve some moving day stress. From labeling boxes to creating a moving folder, there are many things you can do to get your family from point A to point B, as easily as possible.

Whether you’re moving down the street or across the country, your family is going through a big change. Moving is an exciting time! But the seemingly endless to-do list and your kiddos running around the house can make it an overwhelming experience. Having a big family means there’s a lot to pack. Follow our tips and tricks so you and your family can pack like the pros!

Packing Tips for Moving a Big Family

Don’t let packing your belongings overwhelm you. Follow our packing tips and you’ll be enjoying your new space in no time.

1.   Create a moving folder

Keep new addresses, rental papers, moving contracts and other important documents in one folder. This way, if questions arise, you’ll have all of the answers in one spot. Keep this folder with you throughout the process, i.e. do NOT put in on the moving truck!

2.   Start packing early

This step is especially important if you have young children because there’s a good chance you won’t be able to finish packing in one weekend. Start by packing the items you don’t use frequently.

3.   Get rid of stuff

Whether you’re donating or selling items you no longer want, getting rid of clutter is a great way to start fresh in your new home. Plus, it means there will be less to pack! Clothes and shoes that your kiddos have grown out of are great items to donate.

4.   Create a packing list

This is a great tip to keep you organized, but it is especially helpful if your kids are old enough to help. A packing list will help them stay on track.

5.   Pack one room at a time

Start with rooms that are not used frequently, like storage and the attic. As moving day approaches, make your way through the rooms that are used more often.

6.   Label the boxes

As you pack up your belongings room-by-room, it’s important to label your boxes. This way, when you unpack, it’ll be clear exactly where each box should go in your new home! Label by room and with your kids’ names for their bedrooms. Pro tip: put your labels on the sides of the boxes, not the top; when the boxes are stacked, anything written on the top of the bottom boxes will be covered up.

7.   Pack a suitcase for moving day

Packing a separate suitcase for moving day allows you to set aside necessities and things you may want the day you move. If your kids are old enough, have them pack suitcases for themselves as well! If not, set aside some time to put together belongings for them.

8.   Load their favorite toys last

Pack your kiddos’ favorite toys into one box and put it in the moving truck last. This way, when you get to your new home, their toys will be easily accessible and can be easy entertainment while the adults unpack.
